Guidelines for the Specialized Assessment of Students with Visual Impairments

I am the current president of the Association of Massachusetts Educators for Students with Visual Impairments (AMESVI) and I am so excited to announce that the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Schools (Dept. of Education) has finally endorsed and posted a document describing the services, roles of professionals and other details involved with evaluating children with visual impairment and blindness. This document is on the "DOE" website and is called "Guidelines for the Specialized Assessment of Students with Visual Impairments." It can be found on the DOE website by going to the website and looking under special education. Or the direct link.

Parents, advocates and professionals can use this document to drive assessment and services.

There are only 6 states that currently has such a document endorsed by the state department of education--and it was about thirty years in development with some very dedicated experts and advocates.

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions about the document.

President, AMESVI
