In this session PRC will be highlighting technology that enables real communication. This presentation will focus on the powerful Unity language system that supports language development and gives individuals the ability to go beyond simple commands and pre-programmed phrases, enabling them to express unique thoughts and ideas. Also featured will be our Essence™ vocabulary which is primarily a spelling-based program that is designed for literate adults who lose the ability to speak as the result of a stroke, brain injury or an adult degenerative disease, such as ALS.

The Assistive Technology Regional Center (ATRC) in Pittsfield, operated by UCP of Berkshire County is a mandated component of the federal Assistive Technology Act Program in Massachusetts known as MassMATCH. The purpose of the ATRC is to let potential assistive technology users "try-out" devices prior to purchase, have access to a backup system when their device is in for repairs, and have access to a device while waiting for their device to be delivered. All demonstration and loan services provided in the Center are free.

Devices are available in the areas of environmental access, aids for daily living, recreation and leisure, blind/low-vision, deaf/hard of hearing, educational/learning aids, communication, mobility aids, computer access, software and accessories.
