Speech to Text on iPads Old and New

There has been a helpful exchange on the QIAT listserv this month about how to use the iPad for speech to text. Here's the quick rundown:

  • iPad 3rd generation and up has it built-in and it works well in all applications. Needs a wifi connection. Select the mic icon with the onscreen keyboard. iOS 8 beta update is rumored to include streaming (see it as you speak it).
  • iPad 2nd generation can provide speech to text through various apps including: Dragon Dictation, Word Q, and PaperPort Notes. Users must cut and paste their dictated words into other applications, however.
