The FreeWheel(TM) Wheelchair Attachment
The FreeWheel(TM) Wheelchair Attachment was designed by Pat Dougherty, a quadriplegic, to allow users to push over surfaces that are usually unnavigable. The device is a large wheel that clamps to the footrest of a wheel chair and can spin 360 degrees. It lifts the smaller caster wheels and converts a chair from four wheels to three in minutes.
Dougherty lives in Boise, Idaho and loves the outdoors. The website advertises that FreeWheel "makes strolling, exercising, hiking or just checking the mailbox [...] so much easier."
The FreeWheel is made in Boise and sells for $499. Dougherty would like to mass produce it someday to lower the price. Testimonials and more photos are available at www.gofreewheel.com.

Camera Mouse 2009
Camera Mouse 2009 is a FREE program that allows you to control the mouse pointer on a Windows computer just by moving your head. You can find it at www.cameramouse.org.
The program was developed to help people with disabilities use the computer. The main audience for this program is people who do not have reliable control of a hand but who can move their head. People with Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, various neurological disorders use this program and its predecessors to run all types of computer software.
Camera Mouse works as a mouse replacement system for Windows computers so it should work with just about any application program. For example people use Camera Mouse with entertainment programs, education programs, communication programs, web browsers, and so on. (See the Downloads page for some of the programs and websites that we have used with Camera Mouse.) Camera Mouse works best with application programs that require only a mouse and a left click and that do not have tiny targets. It's easier to use Camera Mouse with application programs that do not require extreme accuracy.
What equipment is required? Right now, a Windows Vista or Windows XP system and a standard USB webcam. We do our development work with a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. Camera Mouse works with other commercial USB webcams as well.
This program is available for free download. Partial support came from the National Science Foundation and now from generous gifts from the Philanthropy Committee of Mitsubishi Electronic Research Labs (MERL), from the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation, and from the Accenture Fund at Boston College. Boston College and Boston University also are most generous in providing support.

Serotek Releases "Accessible Event" Online Platform
Serotek released Accessible Event™ in a press conference today at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The accessible, online platform makes group meetings, webinars, lectures and other events accessible to the blind, deaf and blind/deaf. Attendees who do not require assistive technology participate as they normally would; unaware that Accessible Event is running. No installation is required so no trace of use is left on any computer or device.
Accessible Event is ADA compliant (Americans with Disabilities Act) and is available to corporations, schools, and public entertainment forums, as well as online tradeshow and special event sponsors and other organizations. It can be purchased per-incident, on a monthly or annual basis, or as an enterprise server configuration and requires only an internet connection and Adobe Flash to function.
“Whether across the room or across the world, nearly anything a presenter can put on a screen, from documents to web sites, is now accessible to everyone, including those with sight and/or hearing impairments regardless of whether you are presenting to ten or ten thousand,” said Mike Calvo, CEO, Serotek Corporation.
Much like a conference bridge, presenters set up an event and a meeting code is provided to invited participants. Attendees who prefer assistive technology simply visit the Accessible Event web site from the browser of any computer or portable device, enter the meeting code, and the meeting becomes instantly accessible.
“Accessible Event is a perfect example of how the digital lifestyle can be accessible,” said Dan Hubbell, Technical Evangelist for Microsoft Corporation, “When used alongside services like Microsoft® LiveMeeting, Accessible Event broadens an organization’s reach and inclusion efforts with minimal cost or effort.”
Accessible Event works with presentations designed in the Microsoft® Word™, Excel®, and PowerPoint® or Adobe® Acrobat®, with those featuring displays in Microsoft Outlook®, or web pages in Serotek SAMNet™, Microsoft Internet Explorer® 7 or higher, or Mozilla® Firefox®, and with online meeting services such as Cisco WebEx, Citrix® GoToMeeting® and GoToWebinar®, Adobe Acrobat Connect®, Microsoft LiveMeeting, and more.
Presenters determine the date of expiration so events can remain available or limited to a specific timeframe. Accessible Event can run beside any online meeting or webinar service. At the end of the session, a pop-up exit option will notify the host to close the session.
“For the first time in history, blind and deaf people can be fully included in online events,” said Calvo. “And students can bring Accessible Event codes on a thumb drive to their professors so lectures of any kind are fully accessible for the day or the semester.”

Proloquo2Go can also serve adults with acquired disabilities such as ALS, stroke or traumatic brain injury. It can be a useful solution in hospital and rehabilitation settings.
"The price is so compelling," said Dan Herlihy, owner of Connective Technology Solutions, "and the software and hardware platform Proloquo2Go runs on so radically improved over current devices in its category that if not quite a paradigm shift, markedly raises the bar for accessibility, ease of use, and affordability."
Special educators, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists have found Proloquo2Go a proven communication solution for children and adults who can access the iPod and iPhone touch interface. Educators see it as a cost-effective solution for special education. Speech therapists and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) specialists love the ease of programming and customization. Proloquo2Go can be used as a companion to a table top device or as a user’s sole AAC device.
"When we set out to design Proloquo2Go we knew we wanted to provide the kind of power typically only found in desktop applications," said David Niemeijer, AssistiveWare's CEO. "The iPhone has allowed us to do just that, develop a full-featured, fully customizable communication solution that fits right in your pocket."

New JAWS Version 10
From the Carroll Center for the Blind:
On November 3, 2008, Freedom Scientific announced the release of JAWS version 10. JAWS is one of the most popular and versatile of the screen readers which turn print on the computer screen to speech output. Version 10 represents a substantial upgrade with many new features.
A new feature will be very helpful for those who like to surf the web, shop online and perform other actions that require the user to fill out web forms. Version 10 includes a new feature that automatically switches on ‘forms mode” when the user navigates to an edit box using either the up and down arrows or the tab key. A popping sound indicates that forms mode” has been switched on and that the user can begin typing information into the form. This is much smoother than having to switch forms mode on and off. With some of the more well-designed forms, the user of previous versions of JAWS could enter forms mode at the beginning of the form, use the tab key to navigate to the form fields and fill out the form. But, more commonly, the user had to switch forms mode on and off in order to complete the form because in forms mode, some of the information did not talk properly. With automatic forms mode, this inconvenience is eliminated. Some are often frustrated by this problem and sometimes prefer to get sighted assistance to fill out hardcopy versions of longer forms which could be done in half the time it took me to fill out the forms online. When upgraded to JAWS 10, one will be much more likely to fill out even the longest of forms online. The user can adjust settings so that forms mode acts like it did in previous versions of JAWS.
Next, let’s take a look at something totally new. JAWS 10 includes JAWS tandem which allows remote control of the PC. In order to establish a remote connection, the user of one PC obtains a special code from the software and gives this code to the individual who is going to take control of the computer remotely. The individual taking control then enters the code into a JAWS edit box and presto! This is all done very smoothly and quickly. Both individuals can now control the same computer and the settings of the computer being controlled are invoked for both users. The individual taking remote control of the second individual’s computer can quickly switch back and forth between both computers. Freedom Scientific intended that this feature be used by technical support personnel to trouble shoot customer computers. This might come in handy when an experienced JAWS user wishes to assist a novice in learning the finer points of JAWS. Also, both users can share files of any type from one computer to the other. Finally, this feature could allow an individual to work from home provided that someone is in the office to help get the connection started. This could come in really handy if someone were stuck at home recuperating from surgery or an injury.
Now, let’s look at speech options and voice settings. Beginning with version 7, JAWS allowed the user to switch from the default Eloquence speech synthesizer to a variety of sapi 5 voices that are more human-sounding. However, this feature substantially delayed the responsiveness of JAWS generally. This reduction in responsiveness meant that this feature was not very popular. In version 10, JAWS adds the same sapi voices along with some new ones but with a twist. These are now proprietary voices for Freedom Scientific and the responsiveness is much closer to that which the user gets with Eloquence. The dictionary manager has been expanded nicely in version 10. The user can now set different pronunciations for different languages, voices or synthesizers.
Finally, accessibility to iTunes has been added to JAWS version 10. While it was possible for users of JAWS 8 and 9 to purchase iTunes scripts, this is no-longer necessary in JAWS version 10. For more information on the accessibility of iTunes, try iTunes is now accessible.

The Klango Player
Free software provides better access for people with low vision to listen to internet radio stations.
From The Carroll Center for the Blind:
How many of you have wished there were an easier way to find and listen to internet radio stations? The websites of many internet radio stations are filled with graphics, flash movies and Java script which makes navigation slow and inconvenient. Well, I’ve recently learned about a solution which is free and easy to use. It’s called the Klango player. With it, the user can find and listen to internet radio and a lot more.
Klango is different from most other computer programs in that it was developed from the ground up to be an audio-based program. This means that the main user interface is sound rather than a graphical user interface.
There are very few requirements necessary to run the Klango player. All you need is a computer running Windows 2000 or newer and a sound card. You don’t even need a speech synthesizer as Klango is self-voicing. To learn more about Klango and obtain a copy, go to klango.net. For the direct link to download the latest version of the Klango player, go to setup.klango.net/. For a demonstration of the Klango player, visit klango demonstration.

The UBI-4000 is a self-contained complete hardware and software package small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. When placed with packages, vehicles, or personnel, the UBI-4000 provides detailed reports of routes traveled for quality-control and security purposes.
The smallest device on the market, but look what you get...
- Locate your Loved Ones anywhere they are — is your family member home from their day program yet? Has your son reached his friends home? Has your father walked away from his group on a shopping trip? Locate them on-line instantly.
- Locate Valuable Assets — keep the UBI-4000 in your glove compartment, laptop case or luggage and find it now.
- Set Your Geofence — Want to limit your family members walking or driving range? Set the Geofence and you will be automatically notified if the car leaves the area.
- SOS Feature — Want to make sure your child stays within their neighborhood zone? With the Geofence activated, you are automatically alerted if your child leaves this area.
Uses for the GPS Personal Tracker:
- Tracking individuals with Alzheimer’s to help keep wanderers out of harm’s way
- Tracking those with Autism and those that have developmental delays for safety reasons.
- Set as many GeoFences as you’d like and receive an e-mail alert or a cell phone text alert when the device leaves or comes into the area(s) you specify
- Encourage users to use the SOS alert button in times of need to track every 2 minutes for 40 minutes and to send an e-mail alert or a cell phone text alert every 2 minutes for 40 minutes – you can easily set these to alert up to 5 different individuals at the same time!
When the SOS button is held down for 3 full seconds, a track, or a snapshot, of where the device is at that time, is placed on the web–based detailed map every 2 minutes for forty minutes. In addition to the visual aid, there is a message sent every 2 minutes for forty minutes to up to 5 different e–mail addresses and/or cell phone text message addresses. The set up for enabling this feature is simple and straight forward and is ready for use within a few minutes.
Success stories and thank you notes are pouring in from all over the country. In one case, an elderly gentleman ended up lost on his daily walk. He held the SOS button down for 3 seconds to notify his daughter that he needed assistance and within minutes, his daughter was able to pick him up and return him to safety.

AbleLink's Schedule Assistant
AbleLink Technologies, a developer of cognitive technologies, announced a new version of its specialized memory aid designed to improve executive functioning skills for individuals with brain injuries and other cognitive issues. Research funded through DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Programs Agency) and feedback from soldiers with cognitive injuries led to enhancements to AbleLink's Schedule Assistant which operates on commercially available handheld computers and gives users a powerful tool for managing tasks and schedules on the go.
Schedule Assistant is an easy-to-use, PDA-based program that uses pictures and audio reminders to alert a user to any event or task that needs to be performed at a specific day and time. New to this version is the "Quick Event" tool that allows the user to add a reminder event simply by tapping on the Quick Event icon, recording an audio message and designating the day and time for playback. "Quick Timer," another new feature, allows the user to set an elapsed time reminder (e.g., similar to an egg timer) for anytime later in the day. This is used to remember things that come up throughout the day that cannot be scheduled in advance, e.g., knowing when break-time is over, when to take dinner out of the oven, or when to take laundry out of the washer and put it in the dryer. The user simply records a verbal message and selects how many hours or minutes before the reminder plays back, i.e., "Remove the clothes from the dryer."

Apple Computer Announces Captioning Advances
From Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing [TDI]
Mike Shebanek, Apple's Senior Product Manager of Worldwide Product Marketing announced this week that closed captioning playback is now available in Apple's QuickTime software, iTunes for both Windows and Mac operating systems, and in the latest software for the iPod, and iPhone.
Last week at MacWorld, Apple announced a new AppleTV that also supports closed captioned playback. The software for the new AppleTV will also be available to current owners as an AppleTV software update over the Internet.
Apple has also introduced closed captioned movies on iTunes, so you can now buy or rent movies with closed captioning.
Not every movie on iTunes is closed captioned yet, but Apple is continuing to work with the movie companies to add many more titles as quickly as possible.
Shebanek also notes in an email to Cheryl Heppner from Northern Virginia Resource Center that the captioning technology they use is based on SCC files commonly used on DVDs, but also can use the traditional TV-style Line 21 captioned content. The tools already exist for consumers and professionals. Apple includes an application called "Compressor" in its Final Cut Studio software that enables anyone to add the closed captioning content to a video production and output it so it can playback in iTunes for Windows and Mac, iPod, iPhone, AppleTV, and in QuickTime on a Mac and PC."
Furthermore, Shebanek adds that Apple's Final Cut Studio and zeitAnker's Annotation Editor are two examples of video editing software with captioning capabilities that are available.

Active Life Station
Most of us take for granted the simple ability to access the tools we need to succeed in life.
When it comes to manipulating their environment, children with Cerebral Palsy face a continual physical challenge. The ability to simply turn around can turn around a life.
The Active Life Station is a new and exciting innovation aimed at providing "within reach" access for children for whom physical movement is challenging. Our goal is to facilitate success for these children by literally surrounding them with the tools they need and minimizing the effort required to access these tools.
In and effort to improve and refine this product, we are requesting your feedback in our "Participate and Benefit" Survey. This survey is by invitation only. The opinion of our target e-mail audience, Cerebral Palsy Resources, is highly valued in developing and improving the Active Life Station.
Please take a few moments to participate in this survey and help us in our effort to turn around lives.
Your input is greatly appreciated.
