The DMR Adapted Activities Library
presents the following series of courses:
Using Computers With Adults
With Developmental Disabilities
Spring 2009

I. Introduction to Alternative Computer Access *
April 28, 2009    (10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)
For many individuals, using a traditional mouse or keyboard is not feasible due to movement, vision, and/or cognitive limitations. In this course, discover and try out other methods to use a computer, from switch adapted mice and trackballs to touch screens and adapted keyboards. Find out what is involved in choosing the right computer access device for an individual. Learn how to use the accessibility tools that already exist on your computer.

II. Software for Teaching Cause and Effect Skills *
May 12, 2009   (10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.)
One of the most basic concepts needed to use a computer is the understanding that when you click the mouse, touch the screen, or push a button, something happens on the monitor. In this presentation, you will try out age appropriate software that is easily adapted and motivating for the DD population in learning this concept. You will learn how to evaluate and select the right software for an individual.

III. Software for Early Learning- Reading and Math *
May 26, 2009  (10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.)
It is always a challenge to find software that is easy to adapt to different skill levels, age appropriate and not over stimulating for individuals with developmental disabilities. Come try out reading, math and money skills software that fits this description and is used successfully by individuals at Fernald and in the community.  Learn about our successes and failures in using different types of software.

IV. Software for Teaching Social Skills *
June 9, 2009  (10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.)
Participants in this session will get to try out new software on the market designed to teach social skills and to recognize and understand emotions.   Discussion will also focus on using visual strategies, such as picture social stories, to learn social skills and daily living skills.

Registration and additional information
* While each course is self-contained, it is recommended that those unfamiliar with alternative methods of accessing a computer take course #1 prior to attending the other courses. These courses will take place in the Adapted Computer Center located in the Activity Center on the grounds of the Fernald Center in Waltham MA. All software and interface devices used in these courses come from the Adapted Activities Library, a lending library located next door to the Computer Center. Staff will have the opportunity to borrow products demonstrated in the courses to try out with individuals that they work with in a residence or day program. Each course is hands on and limited to 12 participants. To register, please contact Linda Einis, OTR/L, director of the Adapted Activities Library and Adapted Computer Center by email at linda.einis@dmr.state.ma.us
