Overcoming Communication Barriers
in the Classroom
March 18, 2010, Northfield, MN
Auditory Sciences, a new line of multi-language
products for the deaf and hard-of-hearing
communities, announced the results of recent
testing and evaluation of their products for use
in classroom settings. These tests were hosted by Dr. Donna Greenfield, Educational Audiologist, and
Ann Mayes, Teacher of Hard of Hearing and Deaf
Learners, and were performed on location in the Gideon Pond Elementary School in Burnsville,
Minnesota.
"Interact-AS is a new product designed specifically
for the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities", said Robert Palmquist, CEO of SpeechGear, Inc. and their subsidiary, Auditory Sciences, LLC. "For this testing, we used Phonak's Insprio FM transmitter with the MyLink+ receiver. The output from the MyLink+ receiver was plugged directly
into a laptop, enabling a wireless link from
the teacher to the computer."
"The results were what we hoped for," said
Dr. Greenfield. "The Inspiro microphone was used
by both male and female speakers, with whatever
they said being transcribed and displayed on the
laptop. Although the transcriptions were not perfect, they were solid with the results deemed to be very beneficial to students needing this type of capability. I have never seen any other product that can do this."
American English and British English versions of
Interact-AS are available for immediate purchase,
along with language translation modules for
Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Dutch.
Auditory Sciences is a wholly owned subsidiary
of SpeechGear, Inc. that is focused on developing
products specifically to support the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. The firm's initial
product, Interact-AS, augments communications
for individuals with hearing loss by instantly generating a transcript of what is being said, and
enables individuals who are deaf to directly communicate with people who do not know sign language. Interact-AS even overcomes
language barriers by providing bi-directional instant
more about the firm and Interact-AS.
