Assistive Technology: Occupational therapy practice and intervention

This professional development seminar will focus on the assistive technology process and how it relates to occupational therapy practice and intervention. Discussion will address the understanding of client factors, identifying client roles, and matching the appropriate technology for the individual. Categories of assistive technology devices and specific solutions will be addressed.

Exploring Access Options

Joystick? Head Tracker? Eye Gaze Tracking? Multiple Switches? Participants will review methods of determining the best access system for each individual. Topics covered will include direct selection versus indirect selection, mouse alternatives, switch placement and scanning options. Come to the session with a student or client in mind who struggles with access and we will aim to have each participant leave with a plan for further assessing and trialing various access methods.

Boston 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

This is a beginning to intermediate workshop to have you up and running with TouchChat. Topics covered will include creating and modifying buttons/pages, changing the layout of existing pages, using the camera and other sources to import images, creating visual scenes, backing up and sharing your page sets and much more. To get the most out of this workshop, come with a user's potential topics and communication activities in mind. If possible, please bring an iPad with the latest version of TouchChat HD installed. If there is time at the end of the presentation, participants may begin creating and modifying pages with the opportunity to ask further questions that arise.
