PA's Institute on Disabilities Actively Recruiting for an Augmentative Communication Specialist

The Institute on Disabilities at Temple University, Pennsylvania's University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities provides interdisciplinary training, technical assistance, research, and scholarship to enhance the lives of people with developmental and other lifelong disabilities in their communities. The Institute on Disabilities is actively recruiting for the following position: Title: Augmentative Communication Specialist

Summary of Position:
Conducts communication assessments for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities who have complex communication needs. Develops intervention plans. May provide group training, as well as individual instruction in the implementation of recommendations, including communication technologies. Provides demonstrations and technical assistance to community teams and families in the Philadelphia area who support individuals in need of communication enhancement. Provides training (university-based as well as community-based). Coordinates special programs for users of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technologies. Maintains statewide web-based resource on AAC.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
  • As a PA-licensed speech-language pathologist, provides communication assessments to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Provides training and technical assistance to diverse stakeholders regarding AAC. 
  • Provides or arranges for follow up supports and services, in accordance with recommendations that arise from communication assessments.
  • Supports the process of acquiring recommended augmentative communication technologies through public and private funding sources (e.g. Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance).
  • Travel independently regionally, and transport, set-up and use devices and materials necessary to provide consumer/team supports.
