Smart Technology in the Home

New technologies and services of smart homes have potential to increase effectiveness and efficiency of independent living for seniors and individuals with functional and access needs. This session will discuss the concept and nature of smart home technologies and environmental control. Special focus will be placed on access technology for individuals with physical access needs as well as an intellectual or cognitive impairment. Attendees will be introduced to various levels of technology solutions (i.e. low, mid and high tech) currently used to overcome barriers in the home, such as turning on and off lighting, appliances, and entertainment.

How often have you come across material you want your students to read on the iPad but you just don't know how to make it work. There are so many file formats, different apps for different formats and it can be very confusing and frustrating. This webinar will walk you through the various file formats, free and low cost conversion software/websites to make the material more accessible and free to low cost apps that will help students access the materials they need. App features and accessibilities will be demonstrated. Learn which apps allow note taking, defining of words, and sharing of material. Apps sometimes need to be individualized for students based on their learning needs and you will learn what Image from PDF, EPUB, DAISY, MOBI, TEXT, OCR: How Do You Read All These Formats on an iPad? webinareach app offers so you can make a educated choice as to the app that works best for that individual. Also learn how to use OCR (Optical Character Reader) to allow your students to capture text pages they need to read. With a quick camera shot, text can be easily converted into text that can be accessed by text to speech, allowing students to be able to complete assignments that otherwise may take hours. Learn about and understand all the acronyms and various files that can be accessible and how you can widen the accessibility field for your students.
